Front-end

For us, the "front-end" means user-interface design and implementation. This is the area where art and technology meet. It involves specific technology skills, but also appreciation for colors, fonts and a general artistic license.

Our front-end engineers have high-end skills and talent in: HTML, CSS, Javascript, specific browser versions, plug-ins, consumer packaging and a whole host of other hard-to-quantify artistic talent.

XHTML and Web Standards

We specialize in the design of user-friendly websites and adhere to web standards when coding the pages in XHTML. Efficient XHTML code is important in two regards: it makes it easier for back-end programmers to implement it, thus saving time and money, and its transparency helps optimizing the site's content for search engines.

Javascript and AJAX

With the ability to manipulate literally every element on a webpage through the DOM (Document Object Model), Javascript has evolved into a powerful scripting language within the last few years. It's significance for client-side web development has even been further increased through the recent popularity of AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML), which allows for a seamless interaction between the user and a database.

Cascading Style Sheets

We use CSS wherever we can. Stylesheets save time during the development process, lighten pages and therefore make site maintenance easier.

Web Design

We can create whole websites for you or just banner ads, be it in Flash or as animated gifs. Since all of our web designers have a thorough understanding of XHTML and Cascading Style Sheets every design is done with usability and user-friendliness in mind.

Content Management Systems (CMS)

Drupal is our CMS choice for clients with the need to update and manage their own site. We are using existing modules from the open-source community and write our own PHP code where necessary.

Search Engine Optimization

Relevant content is the key for a high ranking on search engine results pages. But relevant content can be obstructed to a search engine's spider by HTML code. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tries to improve both volume and quality of a site's traffic. We can help you making your content more transparent to search engines.

Showcase Examples

Oman Ministry of Tourism - Website Redesign

Oman Ministry of Tourism The new website, which is scheduled to go live in early 2010, will be more user-friendly, allowing users to quickly get to the information they are looking for. Our design concept thus focused on the goal to present the site's content in an unobstrusive manner and at the same time provide an elegant and easy-to-navigate new home for the ministry's articles and magnificent photography. We created efficient HTML templates with a CSS-based layout which allows the content to be displayed in right-to-left as well as left-to-right oriented languages.

PCEC - Site Redesign

PCEC We redesigned the new website of Prostate Conditions Education Council (PCEC) with the clear goal in mind to make the wealth of information more accessible to the site's visitors. Together with the client we re-arranged the content and made sub-directories more meaningful to those who seek answers for their questions. We added more white space to the general page layout, giving the site a lighter, friendlier look. The previous site had a beige page background, which we kept in the mast image of each page. And last but not least, we moved the new site to a Content Management System (Drupal), incorporating many of Drupal's modules to fit PCEC's needs.

Peaceworks - KIND Advantage

KIND Advantage PeaceWorks was established in 1994 to act as a catalyst for peace by encouraging joint business ventures among people of different backgrounds in volatile regions worldwide. When PeaceWorks launched the KIND Advantage program in late 2008 they turned to Boyle Software to help design and code a landing page and email newsletter template for its new subscription program. We worked closely with project managers and backend programmers at Peaceworks in order to create page designs which could be integrated seamlessly into the existing website and which would also reflect the brand's other marketing materials, while introducing bolder styles for CTA (Click To Action) page elements.

AOL - Community Site Quiz Module

AOL movie quizzes To meet AOL's feature requirements for a flexible quiz module, we coded this tool from scratch in Javascript. The quiz score is based on correct answers and time elapsed. The tool allows users to create their own quizzes and upload them the AOL community site.

Rodale - Recipe Finder Tool

Rodale Recipe Finder Our front-end group coded the new, Javascript-driven Rodale Recipe Finder, working closely together with Rodale's back-end team. The new tool finds recipes based on individual ingredients and creates shopping lists of your favorite recipes.

The front-end coding for this project required extensive Javascript. None of the commonly used Javascript libraries such as YUI or Prototype offered the effects and/or flexibiity needed for the Recipe Finder tool. We coded all Javascript functionality from scratch. The elegant result enables users to interactively modify their search criteria while the list of available recipes is updated on the fly (using AJAX). Recipes can also be saved in the user's recipe box.

Seniors for Living - Website Design

Seniors For Living Seniors for Living is a free service that helps its visitors research, evaluate, contact, and compare Senior Housing options. In 2007 Boyle Software was asked to design and implement a new user interface to the existing back-end framework. The challenge was to come up with a design that appeals not only to senior citizens but also to a younger demographic group of people who are looking for housing options for their parents or grandparents.

Optimized page weight was another requirement we had to keep in mind when designing and coding the pages since the download times of pages becomes important once users want to compare different housing options in a short amount of time.

We also worked closely with Senior for Living's editors in order to present the site's content accessible to search engines. In a competetive market such as senior housing, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is crucial.

Women's Health - Front-end Development

Women's Health The "100 Most Useful Websites" page is only one of many landing pages we have coded for Women's Health in the past.

The colorful and flashy designs require hands-on custom coding in order to stay true to the Photoshop files, which our front-end developers get from Rodale's inhouse design department.

We use Photoshop to cut up and optimized the graphical elements for the web and code the pages using XHTML, Javascript and CSS.
