BS Event: Chocolate Tour

This year's Holiday Event was a walking tour of SoHo's famous high-end chocolate shops. Thanks to the tenacious spirit of the Boyle Software team, the driving rain that drenched the city failed to deter our group - or was it the fact that we were sampling gourmet chocolate as we strolled? Either way, the Sweetwalks New Cuisine Chocolate Tour was the perfect thing to keep our spirits up in the damp conditions.

We met our tour guide, Bert, at the first stop, the Divalicious Chocolate Café. Bert started by giving us an overview of the history of chocolate, from its origins right up to modern times, comparing the well-known mass-produced brands to the more selective artisinal chocolate makers. We enjoyed samples of the basic but classic truffle and chocolate fondue.

MarieBelle was the next stop. The five-star décor made this the most posh of the shops we visited, but we blended right in. Our treats here were a sampling of passion fruit and classic dark chocolates. The sipping chocolate was regarded quite seriously by some, while others made sure to run a finger around the inside of the cup to get every last bit.

Vosges Haut Chocolat has the distinction of being the only shop that has it's offerings shipped in from the "home office" in Chicago. This didn't seem to have a negative effect on the quality based on the reactions of our by-now expert tasters, who sampled the cutting edge curry/cocunut combination and the subtly flavored violet dark.

Without Bert to lead the way, we might have passed Kee's Chocolates without knowing it was there. It's the humblest of all the shops we saw, but founder Kee Ling Tong, who admits to disliking chocolate herself, makes what is arguably the best chocolate of all.

The last stop for our cacao-laden group was the Jacques Torres factory. Jacques is credited with starting the whole chocolate renaissance here in New York. The glass walls in the shop allow visitors to see the chocolate actually being made, however we were busy washing down the hazelnut and raspberry samples with more sipping chocolate.
