BS Event: Chelsea Gallery Tour & Dinner

This summer Boyle Software invited its employees to a tour through Chelsea's art galleries. After all, who is more qualified to find out what art is than those who spend most of their time in front of a dusty computer screen with empty cans of Red Bull and Mountain Dew next to it? We wanted to know and we were detemined to find out. Since most of us feel lost and quite helpless outside the safety of our cubicles, we asked Merrily Kerr to safely guide us through the Chelsea art district.

Our first stop was the David Zwirner gallery. The stark white walls made our pale programmer's faces look less ghostly and at the same time provided an impressive backdrop for the recent artworks of artists like John McCracken and Thomas Ruff. It felt good being there. Merrily pointed out the biographical and/or historical context of select art works as well as recurring themes within them, which gave us a better understanding of some of the more conceptual art pieces such as Isa Genzken's four crutches against a wall.

Art and modern art in particular is often quite controversial. Anish Kapoor's geometrical stainless steel sculptures were introduced by Merrily as "sublime works of art" and while some of us couldn't get enough of their own grotesquely distorted reflections, others left the Gladstone Gallery only mildly entertained by this all-too-familiar funhouse effect.

Often art has a stimulating effect, scratching our sleeping creative soul under its thickening skin of everydayness. Boyle Software designer and photographer Sarah Graves, who had just finished a photo shoot with psychedelic rock band Apollo Sunshine, felt most inspired by Asako Narahashi's photographs of Japanese coastal sites at Yossi Milo Gallery.

Hungry for more we finally went to the Half King (restaurant, not gallery) - to conclude this successful trip into the exciting world of art with food and merry drinks.
