BS Event: Into the wild

So we decided to drop the safety of our cubicles and go into the wild. At least for one afternoon. Naturalist Steve Brill, aka the "Wildman", showed us what we have seen so many times before, yet never happened to recognize or paid attention to: all those edible little treats that nature offers to us for free, even in the center of New York City.

Friends of Mexican cooking will appreciate the seasoning from a plant called of Epazote, while parents who have teething children were encouraged to look out for black birch trees as their bark contains the anti-inflammatory oil of wintergreen, commercially produced and sold by pharmaceutical companies at huge profits - available for free in Central Park. Steve recommended to break a twig off a tree and give it to the teething child to chew on. He identified the common plantain we had just stepped on as a remedy for mosquito bites. We found more ingredients to be used in the kitchen, such as the aromatic poor man's pepper and ate wild cherries and black berries in abundance. All for free and readily available in pretty much every spot uncontrolled by humans. It was a revelation to learn that most of the weeds I keep ripping out of the ground in my backyard garden in the forgotten borough are edible and actually quite tasty.

All that was left to desire was a cold beer and so at the end of the tour we headed to Toast, some carrying bags overflowing with edible greens.
