The global proliferation of mobile devices has put compact gaming systems in the pockets of millions of people that never owned a Playstation nor a Wii. The Android and Apple App stores are bursting with thousands of 99-cent downloads looking to capitalize in this multi-billion dollar industry; who will be the next Angry Birds or Words With Friends? This exploding number of readily available mobile and Web-based games is even pulling hardcore gamers online, away from their XBoxes!
Creating compelling games, both for the Web and the various mobile platforms, has taken a giant step forward with the adoption of HTML5. Using the HTML5 Canvas Element and creative, well-organized Javascript, truly immersive interactive experiences have become simpler to design, develop, and release to the masses.
On April 19th, fortified with delicious pizza from local favorites Maffei's, Boyle Software developer Daniela Chunga presented an overview of how HTML5 and Javascript can be used to build out a game that once would have required Flash to be used in a browser. Daniela, who is Games Editor for Royal Flush Magazine, based her presentation closely on this excellent article by Michael Guerrero:
